How are cell phones conversations taped?

For example, Princess Di's cell phone conversations were tapped unbeknownst to her. How was this done? How close does the person tapping have to be to one of the two parties to the telephone call?
After reading Ron M's response (the first response), I am wondering how close you have to be physically to one of the callers in order to tap their calls? Do you have to be in close proximaty to tap a cell phone call?

cell phones transmit and receive just like a radio. all you need is a receiver on the right channel, a tape recorder, and there you are.
