Do the cell phones actually have an internal magnetic compass? If so, will the magnets in cell phone belt holsters hurt them? Do the holster magnets have any other ill affects on cell phones?

I believe there is an actual magnetic compass inside of the iPhone. I have a pouch for my iPhone that has a magnet and it has never damaged any of my iPhones (3G, 3GS, and 4).
