Excellent question.

We have a land-line and three mobiles.

Me thinks it's all hype - do we need the mobiles?

Or should we get rid of the land-line?

CELL PHONES WORK WITH SATELLITES. LAND LINES WORK WITH TELEPHONE LINES ON THE GROUND.IF SATELLITES STOPPED WORKING YOU, COULD USE THE LANDLINES AS BACKUP

  2. I wondered that question also. But we have two disabled people in our household who can't go too far so the landline works well. It would be more to purchase two separate cell phones.

  3. First cell phones do not use satellites, they use cell towers. There is a satellite phone, but they are very expensive to own and operate.
I have a land line and I will keep it as long as it is allowed. I have a personal Cell phone and a Business Blackberry, both of which I will keep to be able to be in touch when I travel.
With the land line in the house, the quality of voice is constant and excellent. I am in the Telecommunications business and when there is a problem with my land line, I cannot be fed a story, it is fixed. It does not happen often but occasionally. The cell service is no where near as clear, very often. I can always get voice mails and understand them from land line to land line, but I have had voice mails on my cell that I could not understand at all.
The 911 service on my land line is accurate and fast. With an IP phone, or a cell phone there is a problem that my location cannot be determined exactly.
My cell phone battery dies occasionally and I do not notice, my land line never dies. If there is a power failure in my area, my land line works, my cell phone works as long as I can recharge it. I have a generator so that is not as much of a problem for me as it is for others.
When someone calls my home on my landl ine, my children can get on an extension, my wife can get on an extension and I can get on an extension and all talk to relatives that are in distant locations, not so easy with cell phones.

  4. I only have a land line, no cell phone.
I cannot justify the cost of a cell -- they cost a lot more.

My phone bill is about $ 20/month.

[ I have no long distance service. I can make local calls for free, 'Local long distance' calls cost a few cents. I use either a dial-around or Google Voice for long distance and international calls. ]

My phone works all the time, even if/when the power goes down.
There is no battery to go dead.
    I can't lose it.

  5. Really it is the service.

First, a wired landline phone is just there, and works. You pick up the handset, listen for dial tone, the dial your number, and it connects. Answering a call is just as easy.

Second is cost. In the US/Canada, landlines are just cheaper for local calls for they are typically flat rate; you can use it all you want, any time you want for no additional cost. LD plans are often very reasonable.

From mobile communications devices, you have to pay for nearly everything you do, it costs minutes, or unlimited packages cost more than unlimited service from a wired phone provider.

  6. House phones are more dependable then cell phones.

  7. I like a land line because it will work in a power outage, unlike many cell sites or VOIP phones. The phone company has battery and generator backup. Also good when you lose youe cell phone, or the battery goes dead, and you have an emergency.! Always good to have that backup. If you don't use the landline that much, order 'Measured Rate' service..Much cheaper, if you don't talk a lot.!!
